Translation:

ELD (English Language Development) is a teaching course designed for immigrant students to improve their English learning and application abilities. Zhijing Fan has been committed to ELD teaching. Given her bilingual background and many years of teaching knowledge and skills, she can effectively help and solve the obstacles faced by English learners and communication barriers caused by different cultural background.

Fan has been an ELD teacher and department head at Ayala for nine years. Her students come from all over the world, such as China, Taiwan, South Korea, Cuba, Mexico, Brazil, countries from the Middle East, Egypt, Arab countries, etc.

“My favorite part is seeing the kids grow up. From the first day they come here where they don’t understand anything, and then in high school, one day, [the student] told me, ‘I want to get into the ELD program.’ I think this is the greatest joy, just to see their progress and growth,” Fan said.

Students have gone from being inattentive to looking forward to her daily classes. Fan knows that non-native English speakers face many challenges, so she often encourages them to speak boldly. She used her patience and care to build a foundation of communication for the students. She often lets foreign language students do exercises in pairs and groups, which not only allows them to deepen their understanding and build friendships, but also makes it easier for them to learn American culture and customs.

“I enjoy being here every day,” Haolin Wan (9) said. “Sometimes the teacher will ask us to play fun games, which improves my English speaking skill and then allows me to teach my friends.”

ELD aims to allow students to gradually adapt to the learning environment in class, with the ultimate goal of being re-classified. Students who have been re-classified can study, attend classes, and do homework the same as local students, and achieve the same success. However, this is often very difficult.

“Some students get bored or get distracted because they cannot understand the class due to language barriers. In this case, I will invite parents to the school to hold a parent-teacher meeting to find ways to help the students,” Fan said.

After trying countless teaching methods and communicating with parents, students were effectively motivated and actively participated in the class.

“You can tell by the look in their eyes that they are starting to change. They become brighter and more active, and then you will find that they start to become friends with each other,” Fan said. “Last week I asked them to show their talents. When showing talent, I found that a student who was originally very shy and introverted—unbeknowst to his classmates—he could actually play the trumpet and the clarinet.”

Now, although some of these students have moved on, Fan’s influence in their studies is still profound.

“ELD has brought me a lot of gains. It has improved my English use, I feel that my English is becoming more and more fluent and closer to the locals, and ELD has some advantages for me to take the ELPAC [English Language Proficiency Assessment of California] exam,” a former ELD student Li Xinze (9) said. “I went from not understanding the meaning of each question to being able to answer every question smoothly and achieve good results.”

Likewise, Fan’s teaching style is also loved and appreciated by students.

“Teacher Fan’s teaching is considered to be one of the best teachers I have ever encountered,” Li said. “Her teaching focuses on the four aspects of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In each of these four aspects, I think she has done it in a way I can better understand, and so I can absorb all the knowledge in the class very well.”
