Drama club is not another club used for free time and pure enjoyment; it is much more than that. Although enjoyment is included, drama club is for students to be supported by other drama enthusiasts as they practice what they love most. It takes a lot of confidence to face the stage with hundreds looking at every movement. The club’s primary goal is to bring these students together to raise their confidence and push them to acquire their dreams of performance.
In every meeting, students collaborate and partake in activities that help them bond and grow their acting skills. However, there has been a decline in students joining the club, leaving both drama club and future International Thespian Society (ITS) members high and dry. Therefore, the club’s goal is to bring in more students and build for the future.
“This year we want to be able to get more students to come in and experience the world of theater, especially because so many people in the program are graduating seniors,” Maya Shah (12) said. “I want to make sure that there’s a strong foundation left that we can build upon just to make every year after that, even greater than it already is.”
With all that drama club is working for this year, many students join for a variety of reasons. For many, it takes a lot of confidence to finally join in and express themselves in acting. However, the most special aspect of drama club is the community. In the club, everyone is supportive of each other in all that they do.
“What’s special about the community is the people coming together to do something we all love and making something great out of it,” Madison Garcia (12) said.
Drama club is a place where those interested in acting can come together and feel the support they need. Without this kind of environment, it is hard for anyone to flourish now and in the future.
“My biggest goal for the club would just be creating an environment where people feel comfortable to be themselves so they never feel like they aren’t judged for anything that they do,” Garcia said.
Since the beginning of drama club, it has been a priority to raise students’ confidence by providing a safe space to express themselves. Without this club, there would be no theater department to run and a lack of productions put on by the students. Throughout the year, the club plans to recruit more students. However, the newest initiative being added is the ITS feeding, where different people will lead the meetings, building their leadership skills.
“We’re also trying to build up a leadership program within the club as well, so instead of the president or the vice president leading each set meeting, we’re gonna have different people lead meetings. That way they can also hone their own leadership skills,” Shah said. “Eventually the people in drama club will feed up into ITS and take over to be the ones that are running the club.”
Drama club has many features of its own making it different from every other club. Although low in population it still stands strong, hoping that students will join for their love of acting and build their confidence for the stage. Joining the club will open new opportunities for all who are interested.
