In the past few months, many albums, EPs, and singles have been released, all competing to be at the top of the charts. This summer has even been referred to as the “Summer of Music.” However, for the past few months, there has been a certain album remaining on the top of the charts: Sabrina Carpenter’s “Short n’ Sweet.”

Though the album was released recently, Carpenter topped the charts early in the year with her hit single, “Espresso,” and has been trending ever since. Throughout the summer, “Expresso” charted on Billboard’s Top 100 and played on all radios. “Please Please Please,” the album’s second hit single, was released soon after, establishing itself as another song of the summer.

One of the most noteworthy attributes to Carpenter’s singles are her music videos, filled with fun and bubbly cinematography and stories which add to the notable personality of “Short n’ Sweet.” This album is loved by many for good reason, and it’s perfect to listen to on days for a quick confidence boost or a day full of fun. Here are four out of the 12 songs that highlight a part of this daring, yet lively album.

Taste

“I heard you’re back together and if that’s true

You’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissin’ you

If you want forever, and I bet you do

Just know you’ll taste me to”

“Taste” opens up the album with a disco-pop style paired along with words of revenge and betrayal. The bold opening Carpenter creates is a strong start for the album, as it was supposedly written for past romantic interests in her life, Shawn Mendes. Carpenter sings about how her ex-lover’s new girlfriend will have to taste her lips, implying that she will never truly be gone.

Please Please Please (Explicit)

“Please please please don’t prove I’m right

Please please please

Don’t bring me to tears when I just did my makeup so nice”

Carpenter then continues her story describing her current boyfriend, Barry Keoghan. She pleads to her shameless lover to think before he does something risky. The comedy behind her calling her partner out added on to the popularity of the song.

Good Graces (Explicit)

“Boy, it’s not that complicated

You should stay in my good graces

Or I’ll switch it up like that so fast

‘Cause no one’s more amazin’

At turnin’ lovin’ into hatred”

“Good Graces” follows the same theme of boldness and assertiveness towards her lover as Carpenter’s previous songs. However, she does not hold back this time. Carpenter writes about how if he plays with her heart, she will not hesitate to leave him. She reiterates the theme of choosing herself over him from the previous track, continuing to warn him of the consequences if he decides to mess around.

Espresso (Explicit)

“I’m working late ’cause I’m a singer

Oh, he looks so cute wrapped around my finger

My twisted humor make him laugh so often

My honey bee, come and get this pollen”

The album continues on with Carpenter on her journey away from her past toxic relationship. In this song she is moving on and living her best life, describing herself as lively as an ‘espresso’ and just as addicting as the beverage.  “Espresso” is a sassy, fun song where Carpenter shows herself growing in her new personality she has claimed after leaving all her past relationships and problems behind.
