As a freshman on the Ayala High School varsity girls tennis team, Kaylyn Wee has shown her intense determination for the game. Wee approached every match with an energy and focus that has impressed both her teammates and coaches. Despite being new to the varsity tennis team, she had already shown that hard work and perseverance are at the heart of her game.
Wee’s determination is clear every time she steps onto the court. Whether she was facing a tough opponent or a hard shot, she never backed down. Her ability to stay calm and think strategically, even in stressful moments, made her a key player for the team, even as a freshman.
“Kaylyn likes to play every ball which sets her apart from most players in high school tennis,” Varsity player Madison Truong (9) said.
Adding on to her grit and determination, Wee also showed great compassion. One example was shown during a match against Diamond Bar High School, when the team’s singles player, Miranda Wacker (9), was in a tiebreaker match that would decide the overall winner. Wee and the other players rallied around Wacker to offer support and encouragement.
“We all stepped up because we [wanted] to encourage her and just give her lots of love during the pressure,” Wee said.
Wee’s physical and mental strengths also stand out among her teammates. Her ability to make strong shots, even in tough situations, is a big part of what makes her such a valuable player.
“Even if the ball seems difficult to hit, she manages to get it over the net and still strategize where she needs to hit the ball to,” Aubrey Figueroa (9), team captain of the Junior Varsity team, said.
While still adjusting to Varsity tennis, Wee already showed she had the qualities to improve and succeed. Her commitment to improving and learning from each experience is something her teammates admire and expect to see grow over the years.
“Kaylyn is a very consistent player,” Truong said. “When she continues to put in the work, her game will [improve] and help Ayala a lot in the future.”
Despite being a freshman, Wee has proved her determination is not simply about her own success, but also the success of the team as a whole.
Wee’s journey on Ayala’s Varsity girls tennis team has only begun, but there’s no doubt that her hard work and determination will help her continue to grow as a player. Whether it’s winning a tough match or supporting a teammate in a tense moment, Wee’s attitude and effort are what make her a key part of the team’s success.
Her perspective and mindset on the game displayed her maturity as a player. This helped not only to keep her calm and collected during games, but also created a positive environment around her for her teammates. This balance of competitive drive and mature attitude contributed to her reputation as a player, which undoubtedly drove her and her team towards success.
“It’s just a game,” Wee said. “It doesn’t determine how much we’re worth as a player or as a person.”
