Highly decorated rapper, Kendrick Lamar, has been in the spotlight this year. His public dispute with Drake resulted in multiple singles from both artists, with Lamar, by public agreement, undoubtedly coming out victorious. The argument between the artists was a defining aspect of pop culture this year.
Contrary to fans’ belief that Lamar would not drop another album for the rest of the year, Lamar released his sixth studio album “GNX.” The surprise album was released on November 22, leaving many of his fans shocked but far from disappointed.
“GNX” is a follow-up album to the 2022 album “Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers,” and it is supposedly another response to the feud between him and Drake. The album is a skillful balance between continuing Lamar’s story while addressing and clarifying his recent memories.
The album was named after a 1987 Buick Regal model car, which is also displayed on its album cover. The concept album explores topics of maturity and self-development and growth, specifically in Lamar himself.
Out of the 12 songs in this short 44 minute album, there are some that have stood out the most.

wacced up murals
“I paid homage, and I always mind my business
I made the-
I never lost who I am for a rap image
It’s motivation if you wonder how I did it”
Lamar starts the album with this thought provoking track, with the title itself referencing the vandalized murals in Lamar’s hometown, Compton. Lamar explores how he does not create a fake persona for himself just to fall further into stereotypes he has tried so hard to get away from. The song serves as a metaphor for the destruction of community cultural identity, with lyrics rich in imagery and symbolism.
squabble up
“I got hits, I got bucks, I got new paper cuts
I got friend, I got foes, but they all sitting ducks
Hit his turf and get crackin’ double back like a deluxe”
Lamar brings attention to what has been going on in his life this previous year, namely his feud with Drake. Referring to the other rapper as “untroublesome” and acting highly unbothered about the other rapper’s attempts to defame him, Lamar seems to once again win this round of the battle.
The second song on the album is a high-energy track that exhibits Lamar’s strong storytelling and lyrical dexterity. In this party anthem, Lamar is inspired by his California roots, with beats and background vocals creating infectious energy.
tv off (ft. lefty gunplay)
“Hey, turn this TV off
Ain’t with my type of activities? Then don’t you get involved”
This song is a message to Lamar’s fans to not let bad influences control your life, filled with themes of disloyalty, perseverance, and independence. Lamar describes how it is easy to trust those who will only further inhibit you obtaining your dreams. Lamar warns others to block out those who do not mean well and continue striving for success.
luther (with sza)
“If it was up to me
I wouldn’t give these
Nobodies no sympathy
I’d take away the pain, I’d give you everything
I just wanna see you win, wanna see
If this world were mine”
This single has officially cemented Lamar’s and SZA’s legacy as some of the greatest collaborating artists. This is their fifth collaboration together and they did not disappoint with their recent work.
The duo created a heavenly beat where passion runs victorious. In this dream world they have made for themselves, there is no conflict and their love for each other is able to motivate themselves to be the best versions of themselves. The song shows a strong yearning for human connection which is available in the world they have made for themselves.

As the year closes out, Lamar looks back at his previous escapades and ventures throughout the year and reflects. It is a reminder to everyone to think critically about issues around the world and in their community and to strive for personal growth and empowerment.
