2024 had a solid film year with a string of expected hits, some flops and a few unexpected winners. 2025 is finally here, and with it comes a new wave of movies. The 2025 film lineup offers diverse options, including comic reboots, novel adaptations, and sequels, aiming to attract audiences to theaters and promising a thrilling year for cinema fans. So, let’s take a look at the top five 2025 upcoming movies, and see what we predict they will do.
1. “Superman”
In this film, “Superman” navigates conflicts between his Kryptonian heritage and Earthly upbringing. His steadfast dedication inspires audiences by demonstrating the lasting impact of moral integrity in a shifting world.
DC Comics’s “Superman” franchise has had a long history in film, starting with animated shorts in the 1940s and leading to recent adaptations within the DC Extended Universe. A new live-action Superman film, titled “Superman,” directed by James Gunn and featuring David Corenswet as Superman, is set for release in July 2025.
“’Superman’ is one of the biggest well known superheroes on earth, so I’m hoping this movie will do his story justice because it’s very easy to screw up if not done right,” Jayson Campos (12) said.
He predicts this movie will get a three and a half or a four out of five stars.
2. “Avatar: Fire and Ash”
This sequel serves as a bridge between films two and five, spotlighting Pandora’s seas and habitats. Expect deep-sea adventures, character growth, a new key figure, and surprising twists, promising a thrilling and unforeseen journey for viewers.
“Avatar” is a popular science-fiction franchise by James Cameron, launched with the 2009 film set on Pandora moon. It explores conflicts between Na’vi and humans, known for its sequels with independent plots yet part of a larger narrative.
12th grader, Tommy Johnson, rated that this film will get a four out of five stars, with this reasoning:
“Just because it might be difficult for people to understand the concept, however, the world building and storytelling in the universe will amaze the audience,” Johnson said.
3. “Captain America: Brave New World”
Sam Wilson, the new Captain America, embroiled in an international incident after meeting President Ross, must uncover the motive behind a sinister global plan before the true mastermind brings the world to chaos.
Captain America, created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, debuted in 1940 comics and starred in various films over the years. The character’s screen adaptations range from a 1944 serial to a 1979 TV series and a 1990 feature. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) introduced a successful trilogy and later an ongoing film series, building on the character’s legacy and popularity.
11th grader, Christian Garcia, predicts a five out of five stars.
“The character dialogue in these films stood out. With enjoyable action scenes and a well-paced story, I look forward to seeing if this movie has a similar impact,” Garcia said.
4. “Wicked: For Good”
Set in the Land of Oz, before and after Dorothy Gale’s arrival from Kansas, the plot will cover the events of the musical’s second act, following Elphaba and Glinda’s friendship being tested as they become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good, leading to lasting changes in Oz.
From the novel, “Wicked,” to the Broadway musical to the new cinematic event directed by Jon M. Chu, fans worldwide eagerly re-enter the Land of Oz. Whether you’re a longtime follower or new to the saga, the final version of the movie is here after a long wait and various adaptations.
“I didn’t know the musical beforehand, but part one was very exciting, especially since many people were worried that it would’ve sucked, so I think part two will do well too,” Stacy Chowtham (10) said.
Five out of five stars.
5. “Karate Kid: Legends”
After moving to New York City, kung fu prodigy Li Fong tries to adapt, joining a karate competition to help a friend. He enlists Mr. Han and Daniel LaRusso to blend styles for a martial arts showdown.
The Karate Kid franchise, created by Robert Mark Kamen, depicts teens learning martial arts to combat bullies. The original tetralogy led to sequels and a 2010 remake set in China. A sixth film, “Karate Kid: Legends,” is set for 2025. Cobra Kai (2018–present) continues the original story. An animated series and merchandise accompany the films.
Emily Nakasaki, 11th grader, rates it four out of five stars.
“The story is captivating, with amazing progression. Visuals are mesmerizing, especially the beach training,” Nakasaki (11) said. “Characters are distinguishable. Funny moments add humor. Short tournament but engaging.”
2025 brings a new wave of diverse movies. Top upcoming films include “Superman,” “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” “Captain America: Brave New World,” “Wicked: For Good,” and “Karate Kid: Legends.” Each offers unique story lines, promising entertainment for all movie fans. We cannot wait to see if the predictions are right.
