As winter break draws to a close, the warmth of its slow morning and carefree days with everyone’s favorite social media platform, TikTok, fades away, giving way to the reality of the harshest part of the year ahead. With the hardest stretch looming–the grind of long, cold months and mounting responsibilities, it is easy to miss and daydream over the funny app on our phones that made our lives a little easier.
“See You Again,” sung by Tyler, the Creator and Kali Uchis is a tribute to yearning for someone to call your own. Being the fourth track off of “Flower Boy,” it is arguably the most popular song for great reason. The hazy, romantic, and surreal atmosphere that the song is able to create resembles the dreamlike trance that Tyler showcases throughout the album.
Verse 1
“You live in my dream state
Relocate my fantasy
I stay in reality
You live in my dream state”
The song kicks off with Tyler expressing that his lover is always in his head, living there rent-free. Even though he believes that he is grounded, his mind cannot help but float to this imaginary person. Yet this dream person does not exist outside his head. Even though he knows what he wants, he cannot find anyone to match his high standards.
Pre-Chorus
“I’m sick or, sick of, sick of, sick of chasing
You’re the one that’s always running through my daydream, I
I can only see your face when I close my eyes”
Once again, Tyler shows that because of his high standards, he can’t find anyone. Exhausted from the chase of finding his lover, he expresses his desire to find his own as soon as possible because he cannot take it anymore. His ideal significant other in his head haunts his actions, leading to his own internal insanity.
The amazing instrumentals throughout the song should not go unnoticed. The music starts slowly with a dreamy synth and piano. The slow production in this song is addicting as this calm vibe soon explodes into a beautiful orchestra. The unique aspect of this song is the catchy trumpets that Tyler adds.
Chorus
“Can I get a kiss?
And can you make it last forever?
I said I’m ‘bout to go to war
And I don’t know if I’ma see you again”
The chorus describes Tyler’s talk with his dream lover. This verse is filled with double meanings. He asks for a kiss, when in reality all he wants is love. He continues to ask for the kiss to last forever, paralleling his urge to have a devoted and faithful companion. He then states that he is going to war which symbolizes his internal conflict of self doubt and hate without a significant other. Tyler begs for them to come to him and let him be happy for once in his life, as he cannot handle his life anymore without them.
This song features the talented singer, Kali Uchis, and it would not be complete without her. Her voice perfectly encapsulates the vision Tyler was trying to create. Like the other collaborations the artists have previously done, Tyler, The Creator and Kali Uchis successfully made a heavenly track.
This week America is saying goodbye to TikTok, and much like the song, they do not know if they will see it again. This song from Tyler, The Creator and Kali Uchis was one of the many songs that were popular on the platform throughout the years.
