Sophomore Chloe Utterback is the true model of what it means to balance hard work and dedication. As both a committed athlete and talented choir member, she manages the demanding world of sports and performing arts with ease and determination alike, showing that with a positive attitude, anything is possible.
Utterback’s passion for the performing arts began at an early age. Her love for theater and choir developed long before high school, but it wasn’t until she joined Ayala’s Choir program that she truly knew she wanted to do it.
“I’ve been interested in the performing arts for as long as I can remember,” Utterback said. “Once I tried theater and choir, I instantly fell in love with it.”
Utterback’s success in choir is just part of her complex schedule. Outside of music, she is also a dedicated Varsity water polo player who has made a significant impact on her team. A particularly memorable moment for her came during her freshman year playing water polo when she and a few other freshmen were moved up to play in a varsity game.
“It honestly was really scary, but not that bad,” Utterback said. “This was really important to me because so many people on the team were very supportive, and it really helped ease me into the sport and get more comfortable.”
Utterback’s ability to balance two demanding activities, sports and arts, shows a lot about both her character and work ethics. Her commitment to both speaks volumes about her determination and drive to be the best possible version of herself.
“Chloe has been the type to get everything done as soon as possible,” Kathleen Chang (10) said. “Both in and out of her activities, she perseveres through everything she does.”
Chloe’s ability to excel in both areas has been recognized by her peers, as well as her positive attitude despite the amount of heavy workload and extracurriculars.
“She’s assertive and knows how to take charge of situations in the most appropriate way. She is extremely positive and always tries to look at the brightest side of anything,” Chang said.
Her friends and teammates admire her for more than just her abilities in her sports and music, but also for her kind heart and positive attitude.
“She has an energy that attracts people,” Brielle Pangan (10) said. “She is constantly thinking about others and always has a smile on her face.”
However, her dedication to balancing activities isn’t always the easiest. To manage her busy schedule, Utterback credits her family’s support and encouragement as a huge factor.
“Chloe stays motivated by leaning on her family,” Pangan said. “Her family’s support is what helps her manage her busy schedule.”
Utterback has also always been a natural leader, both in sports and other parts of her life. Her leadership skills not only assist in her academics but also day to day life. Her mix of passion and determination has helped her face the challenges of schoolwork, sports, and arts while maintaining a positive mindset.
“What I personally admire about her is her passion and how her passion drives her motivation with an ease in perseverance,” Chang said.
For anyone in high school, especially athletes, finding the perfect balance to stay on top of things can be hard. However, Utterback makes sure to prioritize what’s most important while staying true to her passion.
“I think staying organized and keeping a positive mindset has helped me manage everything,” Utterback said.
Whether she’s diving into the pool or singing passionately with her peers, Chloe Utterback does so with a level of commitment that is sure to take her places in the future. As she further develops her skills as a singer, athlete, and leader, she will continue to make an impact on those around her. She serves as the perfect example that it’s not just talent that’ll achieve success, it’s also about the work put in to get there.
