Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, bringing with it an air of romance, heartfelt gestures, and sweet surprises. Whether you’re planning to go out on a special date with a loved one, expressing appreciation for friends and family, or simply indulging in some self-love, this time of year is all about celebrating connections.

As February 14 approaches, the excitement builds – stores fill with red and pink decorations, florists prepare their finest bouquets, and love notes start to make their way into the world. No matter how you choose to mark the occasion, Valentine’s Day is a reminder to spread love in all its forms, and “Love song” by Lana Del Rey perfectly encapsulates that.

“Love song,” from Del Rey’s sixth studio album, “Norman F****** Rockwell,” is a deep, personal, and introspective ballad that captures the intoxicating, consuming feeling of love. Del Rey sings about the feeling of being beautiful and free in the presence of her lover, suggesting that love transforms her perception of herself and the world. The song is dreamy and intimate, with delicate piano melodies and soft, ethereal production that enhances its romantic, almost cinematic quality.

Verse 1

“In the car, in the car, in the backseat, I’m your baby

We go fast, we go so fast we don’t move

I believe in a place you take me

Make you real proud of your baby”

Del Rey opens up her song with a vivid image of being in the backseat of a car, a setting often associated with intimacy, youth, and nostalgia. The phrase “I’m your baby” suggests deep affection and emotional dependence, reinforcing the idea that she feels safe and cherished with her lover. The further lyrics imply that time stands still when they are together and symbolizes that the relationship is like an emotional whirlwind, where everything feels so intense yet suspended in a dreamlike state.

Pre-Chorus

“Baby, it’s the best, that’s a test

And yes, now I’m here with you and I

Would like to think that you would stick around”

She acknowledges how incredible the love feels, but also hints that love is something that needs to endure challenges and suggests that despite the euphoria of the moment, there’s always an underlying question of whether it will last or not. She grounds herself in the present, emphasizing the significance of being her lover in that moment. However, despite the love and connection she feels, there’s an unspoken fear of abandonment or impermanence.

Verse 2

“It’s a love song for you

I swoon with the thought of you

Heaven is a place with you”

In this verse, Del Rey recalls a similar line from one of her past songs, “Video Games,” a common style that she practices. She is at her most direct and vulnerable at this point of the song, breaking the fourth wall in a way, as if addressing her lover directly (or even the listener). The simplicity of the lines contrasts with the poetic imagery, making it feel like a raw confession. It evokes a classic, old-Hollywood romance–a feeling so overwhelming it makes her weak.

“Love song” is one of the most underrated and beautiful songs that Del Rey made as it captures the highs and lows of being in love – the feelings of admiration, surrender, and bliss, but also the quiet doubts and fears that come with vulnerability. The song is both personal and universal, allowing listeners to project their own emotions onto it.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, it’s important to celebrate loved ones and significant others.
