On February 9, the Philadelphia Eagles scored their second Super Bowl win in their history against the Kansas City Chiefs. The LIX (59) annual Super Bowl this year took place in the Caesars Dome in New Orleans.
The Eagles winning was an obvious fan favorite moment as many people rooted for the Eagles since their last Super Bowl loss against the Chiefs.
“I thought it was a really good game. I enjoyed watching the Eagles beat the Chiefs,” Fatima Tavana (10) said.
The Super Bowl is the National Football League’s (NFL) annual league championship that serves as the final game in the NFL season. The Super Bowl has been an annual event since 1966 and typically happens around the 2nd Sunday of each year.
The Super Bowl is one of the world’s most notable sporting events, acquiring around 100 million views per year. This year, the Super Bowl acquired around 127.7 million viewers, making it the most watched Super Bowl in its history as well as one of the most viewed televised programs in television history.
This year’s Super Bowl participants included the Philadelphia Eagles against the Kansas City Chiefs. The Kansas City Chiefs had a very successful past season with their overall record being 15-2. The Chiefs also had come victorious in winning the past two Super Bowls, meaning that if they won this year’s Super Bowl, they would have become the NFL’s first team to ever win the Super Bowl three years in a row.
The Philadelphia Eagles however had also had an exceptional season, with their overall record being 14-3. The Eagles were seen as this year’s “underdogs” as the Chiefs were seemingly expected to win because of their past successes in the past year’s Super Bowls and NFL seasons.
The day of the game, the Eagles came with one goal: to win. They dominated the Chiefs, scoring 7 points and 17 points in the first and second quarters. This set the tone for the rest of the game, as many people did not expect a comeback by the Chiefs.
The Chiefs made many mistakes during the Super Bowl game, which upset many loyal Chiefs fans.
“They kind of sucked, the offensive line couldn’t back Mahomes up. No one was open [and] he kept throwing to the opposite team so that kind of sucked,” Kailyn Harris (10) said.
Every year, the Super Bowl invites a current and popular musical artist to perform at the football game’s halftime. The halftime performances are often a key part in gaining viewers for the Super Bowl as the halftime show ties back to pop-culture and attracts different audiences.
This year’s halftime show artist was rapper and hip-hop artist, Kendrick Lamar. Lamar was accompanied by pop and r&b artist SZA and surprise guests, including famous producer, Mustard, and world-renowned tennis player, Serena Williams.
Lamar became a very influential artist this past year and was a popular choice for this year’s Super Bowl halftime show. Lamar performed some of his most famous songs including his most recent five time Grammy song, Not Like Us along with other popular songs by him.
The halftime show quickly became a fan favorite, with many of today’s youth calling it one of the best halftime shows in history.
“It was really upbeat and cool. I think it was a hit because Kendrick is an amazing artist and it was probably one of the best halftime shows I have ever seen,” Kassandra Sandoval (10) said.
After the successful halftime show, the Eagles continued to dominate in the third and fourth quarters and by the end of the fourth quarter, the Eagles had won the game with a whopping score of 40-22.
The Eagles proved that although being seen as the “underdogs” they could still perform and come out with a win.
This year’s Super Bowl most valuable player (MVP) was Eagles’ quarterback Jalen Hurts. Hurts’ performance during the game was exceptional, with him completing 17 out 22 passes. With his performance, Hurts earned his place as this year’s MVP.
Along with the Eagles’ win came a milestone for the NFL’s coaching staff. Autumn Lockwood, the associate coach for the Eagles became the first Black woman to coach a Super Bowl winning team.
This year’s Super Bowl proved to be a historic and overall very successful game that came with many achievements and memorable moments.
