The sound of hooves clomping against the Earth, the swish of a horse’s tail, and the deep bond shared between rider and animal. This is the world that junior Joliene Mente steps into every time she sits into the saddle. While other high schoolers showcase their skills either on the basketball court or soccer field, Mente finds her passion in a sport that is less seen, but just as demanding: horseback riding. It’s a sport that requires not just athleticism but also grit and determination and despite the sport’s rarity, Mente has embraced it wholeheartedly from a young age.
“Ever since I was little, I’ve always loved animals and my desire to ride just became stronger,” Mente said.
For Mente, riding is more than just the name, it’s about making connections and providing personal experiences for others. Mente’s nurturing personality is apparent both on and off the saddle, as she plays a key role in developing future riders in her community. Her growth as an athlete and mentor over the years has been inspiring to those around her, and her work with younger riders is proof of her commitment to sharing her passion.
“I mainly ride for fun and I teach lessons to little kids who have the same desires that I had,” Mente said. “My favorite thing is seeing those who started so young, grow into incredible riders these past five years.”
However, being a horseback rider comes with its risks, just like any other sport. Mente understands the danger of working with such powerful animals like horses. Although there are certain risks, her confidence that’s built on years of training and experience is a testament to her commitment and understanding of the sport.
“There’s always a risk in horseback riding knowing that these are 1000-pound creatures who have a mind of their own,” Mente said. “You never really know what can happen, but just knowing the experience that I have always makes me more confident in everything I do.”
A close friend and peer of Mente testifies to her growth and ability to connect with the sport. Mente’s growth both as an athlete and person is visible in not only her athletic achievements but also the way she connects with others.
“I think Joliene has grown immensely as both a person and an athlete, seeing her horseback riding journey has been inspiring and her love for animals only continues to grow,” Celestine Susanto (11) said. “As a person, she has evolved into such a fun loving girl and her mindset on life has pushed her to become the best version of herself and I have no doubt she will continue to grow with grace and confidence.”
Mente’s love for animals doesn’t stop at horseback riding. It’s this deep care and respect for animals that sets her apart from other riders. Her passion is an essential part behind her commitment to the sport.
“Joliene’s love for animals is unconditional,” Camille Verzosa (11) said. “Her genuine care and affection for them makes her a natural in the saddle.”
While horseback riding is a big part of her life, Mente also participates in track and field. She brings the same level of dedication and enthusiasm to the sport. Her friends note her ability to balance both her riding and track commitments, showcasing her versatility as an athlete in high school.
Mente’s aspirations in horseback riding are clear, she wants to continue pursuing the sport for as long as possible and hopefully make something out of it. Whether that involves professional competition or another part within the equestrian world, her drive is unwavering.
As she continues her journey, both in horseback riding and beyond, her story is one of growth, dedication, and passion. Her love for animals and her commitment to excellence make her an athlete and individual proven to be capable of anything. Whether she’s guiding younger riders or competing in her sport, Joliene Mente proves that dedication and heart can truly take you far.
