March Madness this year featured many top colleges competing for the national championship, especially in the women’s basketball league. In this National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) season, one team would stand out amongst the rest with nothing but pure dominance.

The #2 University of Connecticut UConn Huskies blew it out of the water in this year’s March Madness tournament in the Division I Women’s basketball tournament. Despite their last championship win being in 2016, the Huskies have dominated not just the NCAA league, but even in their Elite Eight campaign.

Winning every game from the Sweet 16 by an average of 23.5 points, UConn easily defeated high competition in the west, like the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and University of Southern California (USC), as well as other teams who made a great run like the University of Oklahoma.

On Sunday, April 6, the national championship game between the UConn Huskies and the South Carolina Gamecocks was ready to play, located in Tampa, Florida. The game ended in a blowout lead completely identical score in their game against the University of Oklahoma in the Sweet 16. Beating them by 23 points, a thrilling performance was put on display ending with the final score being 82-59. One of the leading scorers was Sarah Strong, a freshman from Spain, who had a great all around game, with an impressive 24 points, 15 rebounds, and 3 blocks against South Carolina in the final game.

The star of the show was Azzi Fudd, a senior at UConn with her impressive moves on the court that not just hyped up the crowd, but also had the Gamecocks’ in trouble on the defensive side. She ended the championship game with 24 points and was the recipient for the Most Outstanding Player (MOP) award. Another prominent player on that team was Paige Bueckers, who is projected to go very high in the possible 2025 Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) draft, scored 17 points and grabbed 6 rebounds.

This is one of the most meaningful awards to many of the players of UConn, having never won a national championship in almost a decade, despite their efforts to make a deep run into the NCAA bracket. This major award would put many of the players, including Paige Bueckers, and others on the map for a very successful career in basketball, especially with a NCAA championship title.

The UConn Huskies have been known for their very successful women’s basketball team, making the Final Four numerous times throughout the years. This specific 2025 win is their twelfth national title in franchise history and a denied back-to-back championship with South Carolina.
