As the school year gets back on track and autumn is just right around the corner, it is the perfect time to settle down and listen to simple, feel-good music. “Rumours,” by Fleetwood Mac, is the perfect album to encapsulate that much needed vibe.

As the season begins to change, the upbeat music keeping summer alive begins to disappear, and we move into slower beats of music. With this change, older albums begin to resurface on the streaming services of people all over the world. One album that truly represents this change of seasons is “Rumours” by Fleetwood Mac.

This album is an intensely personal composition of songs that was written during a time of deep turmoil within the band. At the the band members were dating each other, yet their romantic relationships soon crumbled, leading to several songs to capture the meanings of breakups, betrayal, and most importantly, change.

“Second Hand News”

“One thing I think you should know

I ain’t gonna miss you when you go

Been down so long

I’ve been tossed around enough”

The song holds an upbeat mood in order to capture the listeners attention yet encompassing the meaning of the song as well. The lyrics discuss how it feels for someone to move on from an old relationship and find someone better. By doing so, eventually this person will hear ‘second hand news’ about their previous love and realize how much better they are doing. Although they may have been hurt by their previous relationship, they have been able to continue on and find someone better.

“Songbird”

“To you, I’ll give the world

To you, I’ll never be cold

Because I feel that when I’m with you

It’s alright, I know it’s right”

From the song, listeners are able to learn the universal meaning of love and what it feels like when you truly experience this emotion. The song captures the feeling of selfless love and devotion and conveys hope that it will work out for the better. However the true message of the song is selflessness by giving love unconditionally in any situation.

“The Chain”

“And if you don’t love me now (you don’t love me now)

You will never love me again

I can still hear you saying (still hear you saying)

You would never break the chain (never break the chain)”

This song captures a deep bond that holds people close and together, yet is additionally a source of tension and heartbreak. At the time, it was reflecting the difficult personal lives that developed through the creation of the album and interpersonal relationship between the members. Although feeling very vulnerable and separated, the members were able to make a chain bringing them together to create a beautiful song.

“Silver Springs”

“I know I could have loved you but you would not let me, was I just a fool?

I’ll follow you down ’til the sound of my voice will haunt you, give me just a chance

You’ll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you, was I just a fool?”

Being one of the most popular songs on the album, the song symbolizes a happy and bright future that one once saw but was quickly lost because they weren’t given a chance. The song also expresses feelings of loss and regret over the failed relationships yet still convey anger with a plea for what could have been.

As the seasons have changed there are also people who have changed for the better as they flipped a new leaf for a better life and experiences. This album truly encapsulates those slower feelings of change through all of its songs and carries a great beat that never bores listeners. Although you may go through some tough experiences there is always a light at the end of the tunnel allowing you to heal.
