For Ayala students, October proves to be one of the most eventful months of the school year. Not only does October come with cute aesthetics and fun events, but it also offers some unique experiences. October is that time of year when students experience their “canon events.” For context, a “canon event” was a term coined from the 2023 hit movie “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” and it has evolved on social media to represent unique, life-changing experiences that everyone goes through at least once in their lives.

For some students, their canon events are either devastating tragedies or incredible miracles. At Ayala, students have specifically reported experiencing many different kinds of canon events during October, leading to their own personal dramatic character arcs.

After the homecoming season, romance has been breezing through the chilly autumn air. With the Harvest Festival/Pumpkin Patch and Halloween within the same month, many students have been feeling the urge to find their special person to match costumes and go out with. When meeting new people this season, students experience a new transition in their lives, for better or for worse.

“Around October, I start to like someone,” said Adyson Meylin (10). “It’s affected my life because every time, without fail, I’ll come out of it a new version of myself.”

As the school year progresses, students are also experiencing fluctuations in their motivation and discipline. The transition between introduction worksheets and icebreakers to long projects and important tests proves to be difficult to adjust to. Many students find it especially challenging during this time to keep up with their studies. This either motivates them to try harder later, or permanently stunts their progress for the rest of the year.

“I’m really academic-focused, so when I start to slack off, it affects me mentally,” said Farima Tavana (10).

As seasons change, so do everyone’s methods of self-expression. Many students find October to be the perfect time to experiment with their personal fashion choices. Sleeves get longer, sweaters get thicker, and socks get fuzzier. As fall goes on, students further explore their identities and how they want to portray themselves to the rest of the world.

“Students normally go from brighter colors to more mild colors,” said Rachel Zou (10). “I feel like it just affects the whole vibe and atmosphere at school.”

As events like these seem to take place every year around the same time, students expect to go through some drastic character development during October. With new physical, emotional, and mental transformations, these students can turn a new leaf. They finish summer as one person and go into fall as someone completely different.

“I think change is a good thing,” said Meylin (10). “Now every October, when my canon event comes into play, I just let it cycle through.”
