Drama at the Oscars and Grammys stun viewers
April 26, 2022
The 94th annual Academy Awards show, which occurred March 27, 2022, ended with a big “hit” when actor Will Smith knocked some sense into comedian Chris Rock for making jokes targeted at his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
Rock made the joke comparing Pinkett Smith to a movie named G.I. Jane, in which the main character has a buzzcut. Pinkett Smith has alopecia, a condition that causes hair loss, hence why Rock said, “Jada. I love you. I can’t wait for G.I. Jane 2.” Smith laughed along with the joke as everyone else did, but looked at his wife and saw that she wasn’t very amused by the joke and got up and slapped Rock, saying, “Keep my wife’s name out your mouth.”
“I thought it was really funny to be honest, but at the same time, Will didn’t have to do all that, it seemed forced more by the way his wife took it,” said junior Alyssa Cerezo.
“I thought it was so funny, the way he straight up slapped him, and his face was priceless. My family and I couldn’t stop laughing, but at the same time I felt somewhat bad because it was just a joke. I don’t think he [Rock] deserved that,” said junior Lennard DeGuzman.
Besides the slap, many different movies won awards at the Academy Awards. The movie Encanto won an award for its animation and soundtrack, and many other blockbusters such as Dune, Cruella, and West Side Story were nominated or won numerous awards.
Shortly following on April 3, 2022, the Grammys came through with a lot of nominations for musicians such as Olivia Rodrigo, Doja Cat and even BTS.
There were a lot of great award winners that night as well as performances, but something towards the end really had fans in shock. As the Korean boy band BTS was about to go on stage, member Kim Taehyung, aka V, was whispering and “flirting” with singer Olivia Rodrigo. Both Olivia and BTS fans were shocked when they announced that Taehyung actually had said nothing in her ear and that they were messing with the fans.
“I was so sad when I saw V flirting like it honestly should’ve been me,” junior Christy Vicuna said.
“He’s just so cute and the thought of him with somebody makes me sad, but I want him to be happy,” said junior Emhany Harris.
Bruno Mars fans were happy when he won an award for his song with Silk Sonic “Leave the Door Open.” Younger viewers enjoyed Billie Eilish performing “Happier Than Ever,” which the crowd loved. Even Doja Cat and SZA won an award for best duo.
Both award shows were very interesting and entertaining, and fans can’t wait to see what other drama might unfold next awards season.
