2023 Oscar Predictions
March 11, 2023
The world of cinema will blow up in a frenzy, as on Sunday, March 12, 2023, the 95th annual Academy Awards will occur. This year, hits such as Everything Everywhere all at Once, Top Gun: Maverick, All Quiet on the Western Front, and Elvis are nominated in top categories, and as the competition is steep, it is unclear as to which actor and what film exactly will win the ever illustrious Oscar this year. As the award show is slowly encroaching upon us, here are my predictions for which movies will earn the famous golden statue this year.
Best Picture
PREDICTED WINNER: Everything Everywhere All at Once
All Quiet on the Western Front
Top Gun: Maverick
Elvis
The Banshees of Inisherin
The Fabelmans
Tár
Avatar: The Way of Water
Women Talking
Triangle of Sadness
Everything Everywhere All at Once was truly a movie that was unlike any other that we have seen released on the silver screen. At its core, Everything Everywhere All at Once tells quite a simple and universally cherished story, one of a parent and child making attempts to see eye-to-eye. However, what has made this movie stand out amongst the rest is thanks to a multitude of factors, with the film succeeding in its screenwriting, acting, visual effects, costuming, stunt choreography and much more. Everything Everywhere All at Once is a hit this year at the Oscars, earning a whopping 11 nominations in almost every single category. Although movies such as Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick can be applauded for their visual appeal, and movies such as Women Talking and The Banshees of Inisherin can be commended for their intricate screenwriting, Everything Everywhere All at Once is able to combine all of these elements into one film that is both innately complex, showcasing an array of bizarre visual gags and an incredibly compelling multiverse whilst also remaining grounded, telling an incredibly heartfelt story that almost anyone can find relatability in.
Best Director
PREDICTED WINNER: Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert, Everything Everywhere All at Once
Ruben Östlund, Triangle of Sadness
Todd Field, Tár
Martin McDonagh, The Banshees of Inisherin
Steven Spielberg, The Fabelmans
Director duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (also known as “The Daniels”) have come a long way since their cult 2016 debut Swiss Army Man. With their sophomore movie Everything Everywhere All at Once the duo proves that they are able to take a seemingly bizarre concept and effortlessly apply it to the film medium.
Best Actor
PREDICTED WINNER: Brendan Fraser, The Whale
Austin Butler, Elvis
Colin Farrell, The Banshees of Inisherin
Paul Mescal, Aftersun
Bill Nighy, Living
Brendan Fraser’s return to Hollywood was one met with immense joy from many. In The Whale, Fraser is able to display his immense acting abilities, it can be assured that Fraser’s acclaim will not be put to waste.
Best Actress
PREDICTED WINNER: Michelle Yeoh, Everything Everywhere All at Once
Cate Blanchett, Tár
Ana de Armas, Blonde
Andrea Riseborough, To Leslie
Michelle Williams, The Fabelmans
Without surprise, it seems that Everything Everywhere All at Once appear’s to be this awards seasons biggest hit, and for great reason too, as Michelle Yeoh’s acting as the movies protagonist proves to be excellent. If Yeoh does win in this category, it will be worth celebrating, as not only would she be the second woman of color to win the Best Actress accolade, but she will also be the first woman of Asian descent to win this award as well.
