Now that fall has emerged, slower music has returned to the headphones of avid music listeners everywhere. As the slow guitar melodies and beautiful lyricism emerge, dozens of albums are played on repeat. One album that encapsulates this beautiful feeling is “Milk Teeth” by Suki Waterhouse.

Waterhouse’s Extended Play (EP) “Milk Teeth” is a short album that is able to capture themes of heartbreak, youth, and one’s first love. The title is a metaphor for childhood, as the album explores ideas of youth and inexperience. Additionally, the EP combines songs from early in Waterhouse’s career to add to the metaphor of youth.

“Valentine”

“Won’t you, won’t you, won’t you, won’t you be my valentine?

If only you could see me crying

(Ooh) Then you’d understand my symptoms

If you wanna see my face, if you wanna see my face”

Through the song, Waterhouse encapsulates the longing for emotional support experienced during a breakup. From the lyrics, she is able to express a yearning for a partner who could provide comfort no matter what. Given the season, there is the universal experience of yearning for someone to be with and partake in cute activities. With this song, anyone can relate to a want for someone else.

“Good Looking”

“Play casino halls on one of my eyeballs

Roll the dice on my thighs

You stopped for breath and I sped up

Just to impress you”

Waterhouse reflects the painful experience of realizing that your relationship and connection is not authentic, yet the memory of being together leaves a lasting mark. Additionally, the lines of gambling and false identity represent a relationship where both have a false front. Furthermore, the song also reflects on the memory and the permanent mark left on the people involved after being in a significant relationship.

“Coolest Place in the World”

”And all that I know is

I just think anywhere that you are

Coolest place in the world, coolest place

I just think anywhere that you are”

Based on the title, Waterhouse is able to convey that wherever she is with the person she loves is coolest place in the world. Through the metaphor, she encapsulates that being with someone you love is a warm and safe place to be. Although it may be hard to find, that person will eventually enter your life and give you that comfort you may have been longing for.

“Brutally”

“Beneath my smile, my thoughts run wild

Though I try my best, I can’t forget my past

So once again, I send it on

To the place where love lost overflows”

This song is one about the pain and mark that comes after a loving relationship ends, while additionally reflecting on bitter memories and the difficult process of moving on. Through the unique imagery of Waterhouse’s lyricism, she is able to describe the deeply emotional pain of a failed relationship and realizing that the love has faded.

Now that slower music has returned from the forgotten playlists of the past, people have been able to relate to that longing for love through the songs from this album. Focusing primarily on loss and love, the album is one of a kind for the season. Although there is this longing for romance, patience is key in order to gain experience and eventually find the one.
