In the world of music streaming, the debate between Spotify and Apple Music has been an ongoing conflict for years. As two of the most popular streaming apps, listeners all around the world wonder which of the two is better to use. This dispute has divided their users into groups depending on what features they care about most in their chosen streaming services.

“Spotify caters to your taste and constantly feeds similar artists to the ones you have on repeat,” Arturo Chavez (10) said. “But it’s kind of a shame about how expensive Premium is, and it’s just not the nicest looking app.”

One of the strongest appeals to Spotify is its highly personalized algorithm. Spotify seems to really understand its users, their interests, and their moods. Unlike Apple Music, Spotify is known to provide “Daily Mix” playlists that are genre-specific to their users and what they are expected to enjoy. However, Spotify unfortunately restricts many of their features to those who don’t have a Premium subscription. Not being able to pick songs and listen without commercial interruptions creates a strong incentive for users to just buy the subscription and make their experience more convenient.

“In regards to Apple Music, they have various features such as a karaoke mode that allows you to manage the volume of your vocals according to your preferences and access to music videos,” Hannah Useugi (11) said. “However, a major downside is that the social connectivity aspect is quite limited.”

Where Spotify tends to fall short, Apple Music makes up for it in other places. Apple Music’s listening experience is more customizable and accessible than Spotify, as it does not interrupt its listeners with commercials every few songs. Apple Music is known for its higher quality audio, including lossless audio and spatial audio that provides a more immersive experience for listeners. On the other hand, it is more difficult to connect with others since features like joint playlists and listening parties are only available with a premium subscription. Users must pay to listen to any song on this app, making the platform slightly less accessible.

“Both Wrapped actually provided the same general statistics, such as annual streaming minutes, most frequent albums, artists, and music genres,” said Hannah Useugi (11).

Despite their differences in features, both platforms are the same in the way that they both have the same annual summary of their users’ listening habits. For Spotify, it’s called “Spotify Wrapped,” while for Apple Music, it’s called “Apple Replay.” Both provide the same kind of information, which makes it easier for users from both services to connect and compare their music tastes. When it comes down to it, users of both apps just want to listen to music, so the differences in features no longer matter when all users can share their unique listening habits.

“My Top Artist of the Year [on Spotify] did not make sense, since an artist I don’t listen to at all showed up,” Arturo Chavez (10) said.

Users of both platforms often bond over the fact that both annual summaries often show some shocking statistics about their listening habits. Many people call their Wrapped or Replay inaccurate and unpredictable, so it seems both platforms can share their annual flaws in music summaries despite their differences in almost everything else.

“I think it reveals that I listen to a variety of music genres and that I’m very consistent with my favorite artists,” Paige Choi (10) said. “And when I find an artist I really like, I only listen to them for a while.”

Both Wrapped and Replay also revealed many things about the users’ personalities. Many people were able to connect with others based on these discoveries in their listening habits. Personal choice of streaming services no longer matters when users are able to find people who also obsess over the same artists or genres through the help of everyone’s Wrapped and Replays being shared on social media.

The love of music goes deeper than which app someone uses to stream their favorite songs and artists. Although many argue over which platform is better than the other, Spotify Wrapped and Apple Replay prove that what really matters is the music itself. Both users can appreciate and complain about what they want in their respective apps, but at the end of the year, what they stream on those apps is what brings them together.
