Welcoming “A Street Car Named Desire” to the Ayala stage
February 9, 2022
A Streetcar Named Desire is an upcoming Ayala theater main stage production that will be performed throughout February 10-12th, in the MPR.
Streetcar follows the experiences of Blanche DuBois, a former southern belle who, after encountering a series of personal losses, then leaves her privileged background to head to New Orleans to rent from her younger sister Stella and brother-in-law.
“I play the main role as Stella. I think I’m really able to have clarity in myself as a person and an actor. I also really love the connection between me and my character,” said junior Gabby Torres. “I feel when I play Stella I don’t have to really find Stella’s personality because we both are a calm level-headed person with a feminine outlook.”
This is Ayala’s second main stage since the school was shut down and the company is very excited to perform for the school. In order to make the play come alive, everyone is working hard on the set in efforts to create the most real and lived experience as possible. The student directors Rory Webber (11) and Lily Figueroa (11) made sure the cast developed a connection with their characters and expanded on different aspects of their personalities.
“In order to make it feel great we had the help of amazing people: our cast, Mr. Nieblas, and volunteers that took time to help us. Our play is going to feel different from the original because there is a little bit of everyone, in the cast, in the play. It took about 2 months to make this play come alive,” Figueroa said.
Everyone has put a lot of dedication into this play and Mr. Nieblas hopes to continue this journey of producing more mature films.
Since this production was directed by not one but two student directors, Mr. Nieblas knew he could rely on Webber and Figueroa. He entrusted them with their crazy visions for the piece.
“This play is going to kick off so many new art forms of theater and performance so you get the birth of ‘post war’ theater in the United States with its character study and new approaches,” Nieblas said.
For those who are interested in going to watch the live performance, tickets are available to buy here.
Go enjoy the play everyone!
