More than half a decade ago the UK band, Edison Lighthouse, released their first album, “Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes) & Other Gems.” Though the album was released back in 1970, peaking numerous times at #1 on UK charts, the resurgence of this band was in 2021. In particular the title track of the album blew up on TikTok, charting in Spotify’s Top 200. This week, the song spotlight is an all time classic love song, “Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes).”
One of the most notable aspects of this song is the soft rock instrumentals notable in the 1960s. The drums and guitar are to die for and bring back the same nostalgic feeling that bands from a similar time, such as The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, The Doobie Brothers, and more. From the first verses, this sound is distinct and sets the preppy, happy mood right away.
[Verse 2]
“Oh, but love grows where my Rosemary goes
And nobody knows like me”
The first two verses of this song end with these two lines, a grudging yet giddy admission of loving despite faults. Or perhaps these verses describe a willingly ignorant lover, ignoring criticisms aimed towards his love. Either way it shows a timeless adoration to a girl, Rosemary, that only the narrator truly understands.
[Chorus]
“There’s something about her hand holding mine
It’s a feeling that’s fine
And I just gotta say, hey”
Writers, John Barry Mason and Tony Macaulay, excelled with these simplistic, yet gorgeous lyrics. Sometimes feelings cannot be conveyed through whole novels, other times a few words will do the trick. It’s the little things they note throughout the song that put the whole story together.
[Verse 3]
“I’m a lucky fella
And I’ve just got to tell her
That I love her endlessly”
To depict a love so earnest and pure, a love so overwhelming that it is impossible to keep to yourself, is masterful writing on Mason and Macaulay’s part. It’s almost as if the lyrics jump out at you with the joy they bring. It leaves listeners dreaming of experiencing a whirlwind romance of such one day.
For some on campus, this dream has become a reality.
Walking through the halls this week, everyone has witnessed or heard of at least one homecoming proposal. Ayala’s campus is nothing short of giddy with happy couples all around. For these lucky Bulldogs receiving a proposal, it is no big challenge to relate to this week’s song.
This song is something that has been aging well along the decades, and has never lost its charm. The poppy, cutesy vibe that the song gives off is perfect for romantic times like these, and it never fails to bring a smile to people’s faces.
As the second week of Song Spotlight comes to an end and homecoming is just around the corner, let’s hope that the next week will be just as thrilling. Happy homecoming proposal week Bulldogs!
