Although September 21 is not an official holiday, it still does not stop people from coming together and playing the famous single “September” by Earth, Wind, and Fire. The hit was released decades ago in 1978, yet its effect on society have not changed. The song has most likely been repeated and heard many times this month, but everybody cannot help but love it. This is the song spotlight for the week September 16- September 20.
This iconic tune has a meaning just as fun and carefree as its groovy beat. As the song takes you on a ride through the different verses and lyrics, the singers tell you to remember good times while also living in the moment.
[First Verse]
“Do you remember
The 21st night of September?
Love was changin’ the minds of pretenders
While chasin’ the clouds away”
Notably the most famous verse in the whole song, the singers kick off the song by asking the listeners if they remember the famous date of September 21. They express all of the fun and good times that happened that day, showing all of the savored memories, which successfully shows the fun and positive energy that radiates out of the song.
[Chorus]
“Hey, hey, hey
Ba-dee-ya, say, do you remember?
Ba-dee-ya, dancin’ in September
Ba-dee-ya, never was a cloudy day”
When this internationally known verse starts to play, everyone can’t help but to lose themselves in the song. The addictive lyrics and melodies that the chorus possesses is definitely the highlight of the whole song, and it’s hard not to sing and dance along.
[Pre Verse]
“Now December
Found the love that we shared in September
Only blue talk and love, remember
The true love we share today”
In contrast to the well known parts of this song, this verse is not talked about enough and deserves more recognition. It depicts the passing months after the famous night that has been praised throughout the whole song. It shows the love and thrill that was formed that night has not faltered or faded away at all, which truly shows the overall positivity and electric tone that the song has.
Though September 21 is not a national holiday, it is a big day this year for Bulldogs on campus. This year’s Homecoming fell on the same night.
Happy couples, giddy friends, and excited Bulldogs were in attendance at Homecoming this past weekend. For the Bulldogs that went to go to Homecoming–whether it’s their first or their last–make sure to treasure the memories made. Hopefully the night was amazing as described in the song.
