Chipotle, a chain restaurant that has been at Shoppes for a long time, has been a fast and casual spot where we can customize our food and keep it healthier than other fast food chains. Known for its burritos and bowls and the variety of ingredients to choose from, Chipotle was always a hit. Ayala even does its own fundraisers here, raising funds for the group holding the fundraiser. Unfortunately for Chipotle, a new rival came in during 2024: CAVA.
I could personally argue that the long reigning crown that Chipotle held for their good ingredients was worth the hype. However, I believe that CAVA is better, and there are many people who share the same opinion.
Although there is a difference in culture, Chipotle being Mexican cuisine and CAVA being Mediterranean, they both have similar serving styles and ingredients. When comparing the two, CAVA is clearly the new champion.
CAVA isn’t just some “off-brand Mediterranean version of Chipotle,” as some people call it. It is better than that and much higher in quality when it comes to the food. Looking at Chipotle, it hasn’t evolved at all or even tried to improve and change its menu. People settle into the already predictable burrito monotony. In general, CAVA comes out on top with its freshness, variety, quality, and value.
When we talk about food and taste, CAVA also passes its rival. Chipotle always has the same rice, beans, meat, salsa, and sour cream. Although it is good, there isn’t a variety, and it is just not exciting. CAVA, on the other hand, has grains, greens, dips, spreads, and so many healthier vegetable options. From spice levels to even just a healthy, quick salad, CAVA really feels like a meal someone has designed.
When we talk about the freshness of foods, CAVA is on top once again. If you go to Chipotle and order, the food there just doesn’t seem as vibrant or fresh as CAVA.
Chipotle heavily relies on salt and monosodium glutamate for flavor. On the other hand, most of CAVA’s flavor comes from herbs, citrus, and spices. The amount of heat you can add to your bowl and the layers of flavor just seem like a better option to me. And although portion-wise, Chipotle looks bigger, that doesn’t mean it is better.
Chipotle still deserves credit for creating the fast and casual model we all love today, but CAVA will be the version that introduces new ideas for the next generation. The freshness of foods and natural ingredients will always come out on top. CAVA is just better than Chipotle and is redefining what fast-casual salads and quick meals should taste like.
