The 2025 to 2026 academic school year comes to an end as all the students start to plan for AP testing, finals, and even prepare for the summer and college the following year. It’s a pleasant feeling to witness everyone, including yourself, grow up in the moment as they move up a grade level, slowly transition into an adult.
As great as it sounds, the future is much more potent than you think. Time moves really fast, and before you know it, you will be graduating high school amidst all the fun you are having. Transitioning into an adult, especially preparing to work a career, is very daunting, and to navigate a world with rapid artificial intelligence growth, rising global tensions, and an exceptionally volatile economy, you must take the future seriously into consideration.
What will you do after high school?
The biggest question that students worry about is, “what will I do after high school?” According to a research study done by YouScience on 2025 graduates, approximately 56% of students who attended college have declared a major, leaving the remaining 44% undecided when going to college.
This statistic suggests that nearly nine million students have not figured out what they want to study when entering a higher level of education, not accounting for the people who change their major during their time in college, or do not even attend college altogether.
A number as big as this shows not only the lack of preparation for the future, but it also reveals various problems beyond the notion of your parents telling you to go to college. Students, most likely due to the vast amounts of options, competition, and motivational factors, are often not so sure of what they want to do once they graduate.
Ever since going to college was the norm, issues such as those have been steadily arising, yet not all is bad. There are many opportunities that open up that could help you find what you like. It’s not a straightforward route, but something you can pick up anywhere, at any time, sometimes even unexpectedly. For example, you could one day take a boring required health class, but then discover how interesting the brain is, and you soon pick up Psychology as an interest. With resources today, you can research and find out things you might like just from observing or even hearing about them.
Figuring out a career
Going back to the subject of college, there are other career paths available if college isn’t for you. Many people also choose to jump into work directly, gaining practical experience to prepare themselves for a career. Trade school is also a popular option, getting hands-on experience to work towards technical and specialized work, such as a car repairman. Some people are content with working any job to just survive.
None of the paths you choose would inherently matter if those career paths meant being able to put food on the table, but what makes it so challenging is figuring out what is best for you. The careers that you are motivated to do play a huge role in what is best for you, and that is the main issue that many people seem to lack: the motivation to not only find a profession you enjoy, but to work towards it.
And it can go for many professions, such as school bus drivers. Though the career is usually looked upon as “dead-end” jobs (meaning they have low pay and little growth in skill), many sources, including SageJournals, found that the majority of drivers enjoy the job simply because it brings value, being able to transport kids and help them get to school.
It is not the money, or the prestige, or the fame that should influence the career paths, but to follow in your heart what you love and what brings happiness to you, and that is what truly makes your future great.

Though many students choose to live in the moment now, time runs really fast than people imagine. High school is the perfect time to plan things that you want to do, especially as you grow as a person and study hard. Taking just a little time to picture yourself in the future can really set you up for something extraordinary. The future might ever be so bright the more you care about it.
