On April 4, Jo Adell of the Los Angeles Angels made Major League Baseball (MLB) history by robbing three home runs in one game. Robbing a home run is widely considered one of the most prolific feats in sports history. The last time someone robbed more than one home run in a game was when Jesus Sanchez of the Miami Marlins did it on August 17, 2025. But besides that, the only other recent occurrences were when Jackson Merril and Fernando Tatis Jr. of the San Diego Padres did it against the Arizona Diamondbacks on July 8, 2025. But no single player has ever robbed three home runs in a single game. Not only that, but no one player has single-handedly won their team the game in the way Adell did.
The feat itself needs a lot of dominoes to fall to happen even once. The batter must make direct contact with the ball to hit it into the outfield and close enough to the wall, but not stop at the warning track, or be a clear home run. The outfielder must also be athletic enough to make a play on the ball. There also must not be any fan interference. And that is just one time. For this to happen three times in one game is extremely low probability. Not only did all the dominoes have to fall, but Adell had to still make the plays.
The feat is comparable to a “pick six” in football, where a defender intercepts a pass and returns it back for a touchdown. Interceptions in football are uncommon, and returning them back for a touchdown is even more uncommon, this most recent NFL season, through all 32 teams and 18 weeks of games, only had 28 total. Imagine one player, in one game, having three. That is the impact Adell left on the game. A feat that may not be replicated again, ever simply due to the rarity. Like with pick sixes, players rarely get them.
Adell also single handedly won the Angels this game, the Angels offence was stagnant, it was essentially a standstill. While the Mariners were firing, obviously hitting three potential homerun balls. Zach Neto, scored the only run for the Angels on the fourth pitch of the game hitting a homerun. The game finished with a final score of 1-0, and had it not been for Adell, the Angels would have lost 1-3.
This historic accomplishment led Adell to donating his glove to the baseball hall of fame. It also rejuvenated the Angels, who won their next two games. And confidence wise, it has helped Adell, who has struggled in the past, who in one instance, allowed a homerun because the ball bounced off of his head over the wall. So for Adell and the Angels, who are a young team who haven’t had much success in recent years, it is good to see such an organization get a win and boost the confidence of the players on the team.
