On Thursday, April 30, the girls’ varsity swim team celebrated their league championship victory at the La Verne Aquatics Center, this year marking their third consecutive win. Swimming for the Palomares League, one of the most competitive leagues in Southern California, this meet consisted of six total schools that fought to win the championship title and qualify for the next level of competition: California Interscholastic Federation (CIF).
The Bulldogs won by a total score of 409.5, with the Glendora Tartans following second by 346.5 points. Though Ayala’s boys varsity swim team placed second with 383 points, the total combined score of both girls and boys teams placed Ayala first overall with 792.5 points.
During this meet, Ayala’s own Kevin Zheng (12) was awarded Palomares League Most Valuable Player (MVP). Undefeated throughout the season, Zheng also broke two meet records with a time of 20.79 in the 50 freestyle and 46.24 in the 100 freestyle.
While the championship meet marked the end of league, several Bulldogs qualified to swim at the Division-I level for CIF. These upcoming meets will take place this week at Mt. San Antonio College on May 7 and May 9.
