Venus Ngigi (10) sits in a classroom with her headphones on, deciding what type of music to listen to. Music is preferential and showcases one’s personality, so what does your favorite music genre say about you?

To most high school students, music is their lifeline and their comfort. Their anchor and their enjoyment. Music is an art form that transcends time and really reflects who a person is, as they can personally relate to songs. Much like many other things, a person’s favorite genre of music can tell many things about their personality and their life.

Through popular streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music, high school students can find their preferred taste in music with ease. With a click of a button, they’re exposed to new worlds of music each and every day.

However, there are just some music genres that have a special place in your heart. Some genres, some artists, some songs, that you value more than others. What do these say about your personality?

If your favorite music genre is…

Pop

Swifties unite here!

The first few chords are all it takes to recognize these hits. Pop songs are fun, easy to dance to, and perfect for having a good time and letting it all go.

If you love listening to pop music, then you’re sociable and easily approachable. People love talking to you because of your fun attitude and ability to lift the spirits of those around you. You love to make memories and new experiences with your friends.

“It’s good for any kind of mood you’re in and can be played in many situations, whether you’re studying, cleaning, or in the car,” Karishma Gianchandani (11) said.

Indie

“I knew them before they were mainstream”

Studying in a coffee shop with headphones on or casually hanging out with friends, indie music generates a chill, relaxing atmosphere in which you can study, sleep, or relax.

Much like the flow of the music itself, you are a laid back person and tend to go with the flow. Although hanging out with your friends is cool, you also love spending time by yourself. Since indie music is more chill, you are focused and an intellectual, using your head for most situations.

“They are probably funny and charismatic,” Kayla Huizar (10) said. “Indie music has a lot of genres, from indie pop to indie rock, their music taste is very well curated.”

Rap

You speak super fast…But can you speak Eminem fast?

Rap has made its way into mainstream music alongside pop music. This type of music often features verses with rapid rhymes and a strong, rhythmic beat as background, providing a strong and intense flow.

If you love the style of rap, then you’re outgoing and generally have a high self-esteem, always knowing what you want. You prefer the simplicity of life, but still occasionally love the feeling of being extravagant.

“They’re just cool. They’re just down to earth [and] chill,” Roman Lopez (11) said. “I like the way [rap music] sounds.”

Country

YEEHAW

Cruising down an empty road in an old pickup truck with the windows down and a love for the outdoors. What more is there to say when you think of country music?

If you like vibing to country music with your windows rolled down, you are empathetic and care about the well-being of those around you. However, you primarily listen to country music and are hesitant to try out other types of music that differ from the usual story-telling energy of country songs.

“[Country music lovers] are genuinely nice people. They usually have a good heart,” Samantha Fox (12) said. “I feel as if they are the type to go with the flow, but also never give up on something if that’s what they really want to achieve.”

K-Pop

You like holding down the ‘all caps’ button when you search for them.

Diversity stems and flourishes with the newfound K-Pop music as elements of pop music and cultural influences coincide. K-Pop brings in a new crowd of high school students.

If you’re a fan of these wonderful Korean groups, then you’re bubbly and extroverted. You love making new friends and being surrounded by the people you love. You’re definitely a fun person to be around and you reflect that fun energy towards everyone.

“I would say that their personality is very outgoing. To me it says they are very extroverted and social,” Sofia Mendez (11) said.

***

Since music is something we hold near and dear to our heart for the sole purpose of connecting with others, it has become an outlet of emotion and expression for both the artist and the listener. It shows how much we value a certain idea or concept. It reflects all the inner values and qualities that are much rarer and can only be found within.

So, can you make the connection between your music taste and who you really are?
